چکیده

A basic property of the normal heart is that if its volume is increased, there is an increase in the strength of the contraction. The phenomenon is known as Starling's Law, and as the FrankStarling mechanism. This phenomenon is of great importance. If the heart were unable to increase its output when distended, the distension would become progressively severe. The underlying important relation in the ventri: cular muscle is that between systolic contractile force and muscle (or sarcomere) length: the lengthtension curve (Ciba Foundation Symposium, 1974). An example is shown in Fig. 1. A length of heart muscle is stimulated to contract but is not allowed to shorten. It therefore develops force isometrically. This is repeated for a range of different muscle lengths. Systolic contractile force (nor malized for the cross-sectional area of muscle giving stress) is plotted against length as a

Application of Carnahan-Starling-vdW-β Equation of State for Refrigerant Fluids

Herein, the application of Carnahan-Starling-vdW-β equation of state (EoS) for 13 refrigerant fluids was investigated. The EoS could predict the saturated liquid densities of these refrigerants over the temperature range of 100-400 K and pressures from zero up to187 MPa with the average absolute deviations of 2.66%. The accuracy of Carnahan-Starling-vdW-β EoS in liquid density prediction was al...

Mechanoelectric feedback does not contribute to the Frank-Starling relation in the rat and guinea pig heart

Abstract: Mechanoelectric feedback (MEF) is the process by which mechanical forces on the myocardium can alter its electrical properties. The effect can be large enough to induce ectopic beats or fibrillation. However, the role of MEF at physiological levels of mechanical stress is not clear. We have investigated alteration in action potential morphology in rat and guinea pig ventricle and in r...

Analysis of the Underlying Mechanism of Frank-Starling Law of a Constructive Hemodynamics Model

Abstract— Frank-Starling law, which describes a relation between cardiac contraction energy and end-diastolic volume, is of importance, but the detailed mechanism is not quantitatively understood yet. In this paper, the mechanism of a linear relation between end-diastolic volume and end-systolic pressure as a part of Frank-Starling law is analyzed by means of computer simulation. A hemodynamics...

Exploring cardiac biophysical properties

The heart is subject to multiple sources of stress. To maintain its normal function, and successfully overcome these stresses, heart muscle is equipped with fine-tuned regulatory mechanisms. Some of these mechanisms are inherent within the myocardium itself and are known as intrinsic mechanisms. Over a century ago, Otto Frank and Ernest Starling described an intrinsic mechanism by which the hea...

Left Ventricular Pressure-Volume and Frank-Starling Relations in Endurance Athletes

Background. Endurance athletes have a high incidence of orthostatic intolerance. We hypothesized that this is related to an abnormally large decrease in left ventricular enddiastolic volume (LVEDV) and stroke volume (SV) for any given decrease in filling pressure. Methods and Results. We measured pulmonary capillary wedge (PCW) pressure (Swan-Ganz catheter), LVEDV (two-dimensional echocardiogra...
